Understanding Trauma Responses

When something deeply distressing or traumatic happens, it’s normal to feel shaken. But sometimes, those reactions can become overwhelming and can affect how we think, feel, and function.

A trauma response can occur in the days and weeks following a traumatic event, or years later.  It might involve intrusive memories, heightened anxiety, or feeling disconnected from yourself or your surroundings. These responses are your mind and body trying to make sense of what happened — but they can also interfere with daily life.

Common Symptoms
If you've experienced trauma recently, you might notice:

Intrusion

  • Upsetting flashbacks or vivid memories
  • Nightmares related to the event
  • Feeling like it’s happening all over again

Dissociation

  • Feeling numb or “not real”
  • Gaps in memory about the event
  • Feeling disconnected from your surroundings or yourself

Avoidance

  • Steering clear of people, places, or topics that remind you of the trauma
  • Pushing away thoughts or feelings about what happened

Hyperarousal

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Feeling jumpy or on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability or angry outbursts

You're Not Alone

At Plus 1 Psychology, we understand how disorienting and exhausting trauma responses can be. With compassion and care, we can help you ground, process, and move toward stability and recovery.

PTSD is common.

First responders are vulnerable to PTSD developing given the cumulative trauma they are exposed to.

Plus 1 Psychology provides both longer term support and early intervention after exposure to traumatic and critical incidents.

Early intervention is based on EMDR therapy - you do not have to talk about what happened in detail.

Early intervention can be utilised hours or up to three months after a traumatic incident.

Don't wait - make contact today to address early, or chronic, symptoms of traumatic stress.
